Revision treatments

Revision surgery may be considered in patients who have had complications or are not losing sufficient weight after bariatric surgery. A typical group of patients for revision surgery are patients who underwent gastric banding, as some of them suffer from severe reflux, esophagitis, and recurrence of obesity. The typical strategy to help these patients is removing the band and performing another operation, such as a gastric bypass. Another set of eligible patients are those who had a sleeve resection but developed reflux, with or without esophagitis. Perplexingly, these patients often complain of weight gain. Regardless, a gastric bypass may also be considered for these patients.

In orde to ensure the optimal health outcomes each case that may be eligible for revision surgery is first preceded by a detailed assessment of the patient’s condition and the phsycial anatomy of the digestive system. For this purpose, X-rays, endoscopic, and laboratory examinations are our standard of care. The decision on whether a revision surgery is appropriate will be preceded by a bariatric consultation and attempts to undertake non-surgical treatment. This conservative approach by our experts is because revision operations as a rule carry a greater risk of complications, require a longer hospital stay, and more complex multidisciplinary care.
