Mini – Gastric Bypass (MGB)

This method has become popular in recent years, mainly in some Asian countries, due to the expected weight loss effect and good control of type 2 diabetes and other diseases. However because this is a relatively new procedure, countries like the USA do not yet recommended it since long-term effects are not well-established and there is an increased risk for gastroesophageal reflux, which may lead to esophageal irritation and even precancerous conditions. The experts in our Obesity Treatment Clinic only perform this procedure in a very carefully selected group of patients who already require frequent and in-depth post-operative check-ups for the rest of their lives. Before such an operation, numerous tests should be performed, and the approval of a special commission is required. The surgery is usually performed laparoscopically and is similar to a gastric bypass. The difference is that only one anastomosis of the stomach with the intestinal loop is performed, which partially excludes part of the small intestine from the process of digestion and absorption of food.

The standard length of hospital stay: up to 5 days

Preparation for the procedure

Laboratory tests:

  • Blood count, blood group, and Rh factor
  • Basic tests (sodium, potassium, glucose)
  • EKG
  • Gastroscopy
  • Other tests may be ordered by your attending physician as needed

Benefits:

  • High weight-loss effectiveness
  • The procedure is very effective in patients with type 2 diabetes
  • Relatively simpler technique compared to a gastric bypass

Risks:

  • Unknown long-term side effects
  • Need for very close monitoring of protein and vitamin levels for the rest of your life

Potential complications:

  • Possibility of developing bile reflux and damaging the esophagus
  • Risk of leakage from the gastrointestinal anastomosis, which may result in the formation of a bile fistula that is difficult to heal
